UC San Diego Seeks Approval of $2.5B Reconstruction Project

UC San Diego is expected to get permission to begin an almost complete reconstruction of its aging medical campus in Hillcrest, a daunting $2.5 billion plan that involves removing 38 buildings and replacing one of the region’s busiest hospitals, The San Diego Union-Tribune reports.

The first phase of the project is going before the University of California Board of Regents, which has expressed support for modernizing and expanding a 58-acre complex that was stitched together over the decades to meet the needs of a growing county.

The initial $550 million in work, which could begin in October, would include the construction of a $275 million, six-floor outpatient pavilion whose technology and amenities would eliminate the need for many patients to be hospitalized, UCSD says. Read more.
