Howard University to Receive $100M in Federal Funding for New Hospital

Howard University is advancing plans to replace the hospital on its Northwest D.C. campus — and is set to receive $100 million from the federal government to help get it done, the Washington Business Journal reports.

The $1.5 trillion spending bill signed into law by President Joe Biden includes more than $344 million for the university, with $100 million of that specifically devoted “to support construction of a new hospital,” according to Congress’ joint explanatory statement on the legislation. That modernized academic medical center, with a price tag of roughly $650 million, is slated to deliver in 2026.

The 600,000-square-foot project — part of the university’s campus master plan — would establish a 225-bed teaching hospital with a Level 1 Trauma Center on the university’s campus. The existing Howard hospital would close only once a new facility opens. Read more.
