‘A matter of life or death’: Michigan Hospital Looks to Secure Funding to Keep Doors Open

A West Michigan hospital may soon need to close its doors if it can’t secure funding fast.

Sturgis Hospital, built in 1925, has been looking for a partner for years and could face bankruptcy, WWMT reports.

At a City Commission meeting earlier this month, hospital officials asked the city for a $645,000 loan to help them keep their doors open as they await potential state funding. The loan money would come from the American Rescue Plan Funding, Sturgis City Manager Michael Hughes said.

The state is looking to complete its budget by June 30, Senator Kim LaSata said. She has been working with the hospital and has asked for a one-time $10 million grant for the hospital.

Community members said having a hospital in Sturgis is critical and could be the difference between someone surviving and someone not making it in an emergency situation.

“It’s truly a matter of life or death for some people,” Ed Stemen, one Sturgis resident said. “It’s close. Critical care is there if you need it in a time of an emergency.”

The next closest hospital would be across state lines in Indiana– about 11 miles away. Read more.
