FTC Warns One Medical & Amazon About Keeping Health Data Secure

The Federal Trade Commission in a statement this week warned Amazon and One Medical that the newly mergered company must keep healthcare data safe. The company is prohibited from using it for advertising or marketing.

Amazon has said it would not share One Medical patients’ personal health information to sell other Amazon products. The FTC said the company “should be on notice” that it must uphold that statement. 

“Companies that fail to abide by the commitments and representations they have made to consumers can violate Section 5 of the FTC Act,” the regulator wrote.

Amazon and One Medical completed their $3.9 billion deal last week without regulatory challenges. The FTC has left open the window, however, to bring future action against the company if it is deemed necessary. Read more.
