North Carolina Senate Republicans outlined a budget proposal that could shut down certain hospitals if they do not hit a savings target for reducing costs for the state health plan, which serves teachers and state employees, Becker’s reports.
Under the proposal, urban hospitals would be required to reduce “healthcare costs to the citizens of this state as a requirement for hospital licensure,” Senate Republicans said in a press conference.
The provision would be for hospitals in counties with a population of more than 210,000 — of which there are 12. It would also include hospitals recognized as academic medical centers, such as UNC Medical Center in Chapel Hill. Read more.
