South City Hospital in St. Louis Set to Close

South City Hospital, formerly known as St. Alexius, plans to shut down in the coming weeks, the latest in a series of hardships for the 154-year-old St. Louis institution.

The hospital began transferring patients to other facilities this week, and will start closing the 178-bed facility today, according to a notice filed with the state. In a letter to employees, the hospital’s receiver said medical services would be cut back in stages and layoffs are underway.

Residents needing emergency care should go elsewhere, a hospital official said.

The hospital, founded in 1869 by the Catholic order of Alexian Brothers, has been in financial distress for years and has been under receivership for the past couple of months, reports The St. Louis Post-Dispatch. Read more.
