HHS Warns Healthcare Companies that DDoS Attacks are Becoming More Sophisticated

The Department of Health and Human Services’ Health Sector Cybersecurity Coordination Center in a briefing released this week said Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks have the potential to deny healthcare organizations and providers access to vital resources that can have detrimental impact on the ability to provide care.

DDoS attacks are getting more sophisticated and complex while getting easier and cheaper to perpetrate, the department said, as cyber criminals take advantage of the sheer number of insecure internet-connected devices.

In healthcare, disruptions due to a cyber-attack may interrupt business continuity by keeping patients or healthcare personnel from accessing critical healthcare assets such as electronic health records, softwarebased medical equipment, and websites to coordinate critical tasks. Read more.
