Flagstaff, AZ Leaders Approve First Phase of New $800M Hospital

Flagstaff City Council voted to move forward with the first phase of Northern Arizona Healthcare’s proposed new hospital campus, azcentral.com reports.

The first phase of the plan includes a 700,000-square-foot hospital to replace an aging facility. The second phase includes housing, a hotel and healthcare-centered retail and restaurants in a health and wellness village.

Councilmembers ultimately voted 6-1 in approval of the plan with vice mayor Austin Aslan representing the sole dissenting vote. Aslan instead wanted to postpone the vote another six months in order to conduct more research on the potential community impact of the new hospital.

“I’m convinced we need a new hospital,” Aslan said, but he questioned whether a billion-dollar new build is the best option. Read more.
