Florida and Georgia are two of many states contending with how much independence to give nurse practitioners and other medical professionals. It’s a question that has become emotional for many medical providers and time-consuming for many state and federal groups lobbying on their behalf, The Washington Post reports.
The past several years have seen hundreds of laws proposing to expand nondoctor medical professionals’ work, the American Medical Association (AMA) says, noting that it and allies have put millions of dollars into fighting back. More than half of states no longer require a physician to sign off on the work of a nurse practitioner, who can have as little as 10% of the clinical hours as doctors before getting their degree.
