Government Funding

The four hospitals would split more than $12.5 million. If approved, it would bring the total number of rural Arkansas hospitals receiving aid to 10, and the amount of funding distributed would reach $40 million. 

The Maternal and Child Health Bureau, housed under the Health Resources and Services Administration, made the investment.

The money will support injured and sick workers in the Mid-Hudson Valley and New York City regions—$1,341,000 per year for the city and $1,085,000 per year for the mid-Hudson.

Much of the money comes from a one-time payout of about $1.6 billion in federal funds flowing to the state thanks to financial incentives tied to the state’s adoption of Medicaid expansion. 

The funding will help with critical facility improvements throughout the hospital including $180,000 towards emergency room updates, $4.5 million for the relocation of the neonatal intensive care unit and a $4.5 million MRI suite expansion.

Quentin Whitwell, CEO of Progressive Health Group — an Oxford, MS-based hospital management group with experience in the rural sector — heard about the looming closure at St. Mark's. Hoping to save the hospital, he connected with the Hospital Center of Excellence, a nonprofit formed by five community members with the same mission. 

The funding will provide upgraded equipment to medical sites including Jacobi and Lincoln Hospital, Gotham Health Belvis, Morrisania and North Central Bronx Hospital.

The new award, the first ARPA-H contract award for any University of California campus, will help the researchers develop better ways to prevent and mitigate ransomware attacks.
