Several states are collectively putting billions into safety-net hospitals with ties to both the civil and justice systems. At the same time, the private sector struggles to convert demand for services into business opportunities.

The grant will allow Trinity Health to start a hub to help adults over 65 and Black and Latinx/Hispanic adults 18 or older who are at risk for type 2 diabetes.

According to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention data, more than 107,000 Americans died from drug overdoses in 2021, an increase of more than 15% from 2020.

The rural emergency hospital designation — which took effect Jan. 1 — aims to curb rural hospital closures by offering them a chance to close infrequently used inpatient beds and focus on outpatient and emergency department services.

An additional $3 million is coming from the U.S Department of Health and Human Services.

Sonoma Valley Hospital is one of 17 hospitals in the state and the only one in the North Bay chosen to receive millions of dollars in a no-interest loan under a new state program designed to help financially struggling hospitals.

The program is offering an additional $240.5 million in no-interest loans to 16 other troubled hospitals, including Beverly Community Hospital in Montebello and Hazel Hawkins Memorial Hospital in Hollister, both of which filed for bankruptcy earlier this year.

The funding is for 17 new hospital builds across Texas. It’s about a 30% increase in mental health funding.
