Madera Community Hospital already has $5 million secured in the budget, but before the hospital can receive funds, it must show proof that it can get out of the red and into the black.

A third of Mississippi’s rural hospitals are at risk of closure, and half of those within a couple of years.

The reopening after three years was supported through the county's approval of $13.49 million in one-time federal COVID-19 relief funds.

Hospital supporters say under this plan, the money would be used to bring the medical center up to code, and then reopen the emergency room and use the remaining part of the building for psychiatric services.

Mary Free Bed wants to raise $30 million total from public sources and $30 million through private philanthropy to finance the project, which is a joint venture with Corewell Health’s Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital. 

The bills would offer new grants for health centers and clinics to hire staff and stay open longer, create a loan repayment program for health-care providers focused on areas with severe shortages, and increase Medicare payments to rural hospitals.

Mayor Harris’ team has to sell the Shelby County Commission on a funding plan, and it’s going to be a hard sell. Part of the plan includes the possibility of increasing the wheel tax, which was originally created as a “temporary” tax to generate revenue. But everyone who owns a car in Memphis and Shelby County has been paying the wheel tax since 1987.

The preliminary request for the State of Minnesota to support the university's health system, UMN Health, aims to acquire flagship healthcare facilities — the University Medical Center East and West Bank facilities, Masonic Children's Hospital and its clinics and surgery center — and operate those facilities.

It allocates $144.3 billion in discretionary funding to the agency, up from $127.3 billion in 2023.

The $6.8 trillion dollar proposed budget also includes $32 million allocated to train nurse faculty and $28 million for innovative approaches to “recruit, support and train” the next generation of health care providers.
